I have seen a handful of vanity channels, so-called business presentations, video blogs, and all the rest, and I gotta tell ya.. owning a video camera or a web cam no more makes you a talk show host than owning a guitar makes you Erc Clapton.<\/p>\n

I was compelled to start watching these folks because they had a headline that drew me in, they said something interesting, or because I know them. Truthfully, \u00a0I didn\u2019t last more than 3 minutes.<\/p>\n

So I keep coming back to something I\u2019ve said time and time again: Either you want to be known as an expert<\/a>, or you want people to buy a product or service from you, so be as professional as you know how, or the next guy will.\u00a0 Online video has no excuses for poor quality.\u00a0 If you\u2019re going to shoot yourself, here\u2019s how to do it with a little class:<\/p>\n

  1. Find an uncluttered spot. Look at your surroundings the way the camera is going to see it. Don\u2019t let anything get in the way of the camera\u2019s main focus.<\/li>\n
  2. Back Away From The Camera.\u00a0 Really. All this fisheyed e-trade baby video is making me nauseous.<\/li>\n
  3. SMILE !!!!\u00a0 And hold eye contact. Put a picture of someone you care a lot about beside that camera lens.\u00a0 Then talk to them.\u00a0 You will be more natural<\/li>\n
  4. Take off the headphones.\u00a0 You don\u2019t have to hear yourself. It also looks really low tech. If there are music cues or an interview you have to respond to, get an earpiece, or just set the phones down out of camera range. You\u2019ll still be able to hear it.<\/li>\n
  5. Don\u2019t take five minutes to get to the content. \u00a0I don\u2019t really care that this is your fifth show, and you now have two thousand viewers.\u00a0 Acknowledge what I came to see. At least Letterman and Leno start with a rundown of what the show\u2019s going to be about.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a bad idea for you to do that, too.\u00a0 Of course, it will mean actually planning, and not talking off the top of your head.<\/li>\n
  6. That will directly affect your \u201cum\u201d quotient.\u00a0 Take notes, and use those notes to prompt you for the next idea.\u00a0 Planning and focusing keeps the \u201cums\u201d to a mimimum.\u00a0 A little silence is a lot more preferable to inane babble.<\/li>\n
  7. Keep it short and to the point.\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to watch you for an hour. Especially if it\u2019s just you on camera.\u00a0 Sorry if it hurts your feelings.\u00a0 Brevity is the soul of wit. You\u2019ll get more viewers with a shorter piece. You\u2019ll be more focused.\u00a0 Did you know that all of the network evening news shows used to be 15 minutes long?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    If you can do those simple things, you\u2019ll be surprised how better you look, and how much more professional you come across.<\/p>\n
